We practice being stressed often enough: we also need to practice rest. Restorative yoga is a deeply relaxing form of yoga that can calm anxiety, improve digestion and immune function, and help us sleep. By supporting our bodies with props in restful positions for 5-10 minutes at a time, we practice mindful calm, a habit that can help us greatly in our day-to-day lives. In this class, Julie provides personal attention to each person through the use of props and sometimes gentle supportive touch. Please let Julie know if you do not want to receive that attention.

This class is an excellent support for people working with injuries, chronic pain, stress, anxiety, insomnia, pregnancy, and many other human conditions, as long as resting quietly in a room with other people is comfortable.

Join Iyengar Yoga teacher Meghan Goodman for a progressive series of classes on Sunday evenings. From the Ground Up is a 7-week course designed to create a strong foundation for students new to yoga while offering opportunities for those with a regular practice to deepen their understanding of the poses and how they work best in our own bodies.

Week 1: Feet, Ankles, and Knees: Learn how correct actions and alignment in the lower part of the body can help improve balance, stability, and joint health.

Week 2: Legs and Hips: Discover how the standing poses can build energy, stamina, and confidence while better understanding how to open and strengthen the legs. Experience the differences between internal and external rotation of the hips. Learn conditioning exercises for stability, and safe stretches that open the hip without disrupting the knees.

Week 3: Abdomen and Lower Back: Focus on strengthening the abdomen to keep your lower back healthy in yoga practice and in life.

Week 4: Upper Back and Shoulders: Experience how the use of the arms and legs can support the opening of the chest. Find strength and space in the shoulders to prepare the body for inversions.

Week 5: Mobility through movement: This class will focus on slow-paced sun salutations and the linking of postures with the breath for a warming and playful practice.

Week 6: Reverse the flow: Learn safe inversion practices for your own level of experience. Through preparations and the use of props, students will learn how to build strong foundations and find optimal alignment in order to receive the many benefits of turning upside down.

Week 7: Restoration and breathing: The final week of this session will offer a chance to work with the subtle body through gentle postures and exploration of pranayama, the art and science of the breath.

Haley Plaa has been teaching yoga for over 7 years. She has been offering touch-based classes and workshops since 2015. After completing her first Yogassage training under the guidance of Brittanie Firth, through committed practice with fellow yogassage trainees, she offers and assists in workshops at Moksha Yoga Vancouver, Lululemon, Semperviva, Ocean and Crow Yoga Space/Studio and the Hive Northshore. With a passion for the therapeutics of touch, she is continually finding new techniques to massage and learn more deeply about how the body functions and with added touch, its direct effect on the mind and body. This is an offering close to Haley’s heart, as her passion is to encourage connection and relaxation through intention, intelligence and respect.

How to Make a Living as a Yoga Teacher with Julie Peters (April 2018) CAD$103.95Purchase required to enroll

Teaching yoga (or dance or qi gong or whatever) is a wonderful offering of help and care from your heart. But you also need to make enough money to live if you've chosen your passion as a career. The truth is, it's possible to make a (good!) living doing these entrepreneurial things with a few basic principles and guidelines. Learn from my many mistakes and successes after nearly a decade running a yoga studio and making my own way as a yoga teacher. As it turns out, you can offer what you really care about doing and make money without losing your soul or spending all your time on social media--even in a competitive city like Vancouver. Let me share what I've learned works and what really doesn't.

This workshop is for new yoga teachers and for experienced teachers who want to learn to work smarter, not harder, and sustain themselves better in what they do. We will discuss possible paths for yoga teachers and how to figure out what you really want to do with your existing skillset. We will explore best practices for filling your classes, getting paid well, and building your career into something that can nourish and sustain you. These principles are specifically focused on teaching yoga, but the principles will be of benefit to anyone whose work is entrepreneurial in nature. This is not a yoga class; we will be sitting on the floor (with props!) mostly talking. Bring a journal.

For the past seven years, she has been running Ocean and Crow Yoga studio, and has gone through many shifts and changes with the studio and in her own career. She has also seen many yoga teachers come through the studio struggling through the sometimes difficult life of teaching, and has learned a lot about what works, what doesn’t, and how to make this life work. She is so excited to support you by sharing some of what she’s learned over the years. She is also the author of the book Secrets of the Eternal Moon Phase Goddesses: Meditations on Desire, Relationships, and the Art of Being Broken (SkyLight Paths 2016). Understanding Your Pelvic Floor (April 2018) CAD$47.25Purchase required to enroll

The pelvic floor is a part of our bodies that can be a bit elusive. We all have one, and mostly don't really think about it....... until we have to think about it. Like when it gets injured in childbirth, or when we experience incontinence, pelvic pain, or lower back issues that won't go away. Sound familiar?

There are so many factors that can lead us to a disjointed relationship with this integral part of our core. In this workshop we demystify the pelvic floor to gain more understanding. We'll be breaking it down and analyzing it in all its beautiful detail, and then exploring movement patterns in the pelvic area and the rest of the body so we can bring the the whole system into a balanced synergetic relationship, helping our pelvic floors work better in our day-to-day lives.

All levels welcome; we will be working on our hands and knees, on our feet, and on our backs.

Sunday, April 8th, 3:00-5:00pm
$40+tax before April 1st. Late registration (after April 1st) $45+tax

Chiara Martini has used movement has her expressive medium since she was 3. Growing up dancing she started to explore herself this way. Moving into yoga and then Pilates as an adult this brought her to find a deep connection to her pelvic floor. She is focused on women’s health and pelvic floor health and seeks to help other people dive deeper into their own bodies and minds.

Retreat into a weekend of Restorative yoga practice and learning with Julie Peters.

Restorative yoga is a practice of rest. When it works, it can help our systems enter into a natural state of healing, which supports digestion, immune system, hormonal balance, sleep, and emotional processing. Immerse yourself in the practice and learn more about how it works over this delightful, restful weekend immersion.

In this immersion, we’ll practice our favourite poses, and Julie will offer tools, tips, and modifications for an effective Restorative practice for a range of body types, pregnancy, and common issues and injuries. We’ll explore how Restorative yoga can help people healing from trauma, and how mindful hands-on support can help. We’ll also consider how we can take our Restorative practices out into the world to have healthier and more responsive nervous systems in our day-to-day lives. If you are a teacher, these practices will be immediately applicable to your classes. If not, you will have lots of useful information for your own practice or to offer to a loved one dealing with insomnia or stress or a range of other issues.
