Aligning Body, Mind and Breath: Iyengar Yoga with Meghan Goodman (Sept-Oct 2018) CAD$23 per classPurchase required to enroll

Do you want to start your day off right? Join Meghan Goodman, certified Iyengar yoga instructor, for an alignment based practice that will help you feel more centered and energized for your day. Although it’s not a super hard class, we do core work, gently flowing through yoga postures with breath, and finish with some wonderful stretches and self massage goodness. It’s real. It’s nice. It’s for every body. It’s for every level. It’s just yoga for humans.

Restorative Yoga: Rest, Heal, Reset with Julie Peters (Sept-Oct 2018) CAD$23 per classPurchase required to enroll

We practice being stressed often enough: we also need to practice rest. Restorative yoga is a deeply relaxing form of yoga that can calm anxiety, improve digestion and immune function, and help us sleep. By supporting our bodies with props in restful positions for 5-10 minutes at a time, we practice mindful calm, a habit that can help us greatly in our day-to-day lives. In this class, Julie provides personal attention to each person through the use of props and sometimes gentle supportive touch. Please let Julie know if you do not want to receive that attention.

This class is an excellent support for people working with injuries, chronic pain, stress, anxiety, insomnia, pregnancy, and many other human conditions, as long as resting quietly in a room with other people is comfortable.

Feel Good Yoga with Julie (Sept-Oct 2018) CAD$21 per classPurchase required to enroll

In this chilled-out all-levels class, we will stretch out our shoulders, backs, and hips, gently strengthen supportive muscles in the body, take deep breaths, slow down, and relax. The point of this class is to feel good, so we’ll sample from a range of different movement practices to ease our creaky joints and get our pep back in our step. We’ll do some standing, seated, and lying down poses with minimal weight bearing on the arms. Small class sizes ensure personal attention so if you’re working with injuries or any special concerns we will figure out how to modify so the practice works for you. Pregnant people are welcome as are brand-new beginners and anyone else who wants to take a break on a Tuesday to feel good.

We will move dynamically (but intentionally) with our breath, showing up to how we feel and letting go of what we don't need. This class involves some physical challenge and playful exploration, but there are always options to modify depending on what you need that day. Each class ends with a deep stretch and a satisfying rest.

All levels are welcome. Modifications will always be offered for injuries or limitations. Pregnant students comfortable in a yoga practice are welcome.

How to Make a Living as a Yoga Teacher with Julie Peters (April 2018) CAD$120.75Purchase required to enroll

Teaching yoga (or dance or qi gong or whatever) is a wonderful offering of help and care from your heart. But you also need to make enough money to live if you've chosen your passion as a career. The truth is, it's possible to make a (good!) living doing these entrepreneurial things with a few basic principles and guidelines. Learn from my many mistakes and successes after nearly a decade running a yoga studio and making my own way as a yoga teacher. As it turns out, you can offer what you really care about doing and make money without losing your soul or spending all your time on social media--even in a competitive city like Vancouver. Let me share what I've learned works and what really doesn't.

This workshop is for new yoga teachers and for experienced teachers who want to learn to work smarter, not harder, and sustain themselves better in what they do. We will discuss possible paths for yoga teachers and how to figure out what you really want to do with your existing skillset. We will explore best practices for filling your classes, getting paid well, and building your career into something that can nourish and sustain you. These principles are specifically focused on teaching yoga, but the principles will be of benefit to anyone whose work is entrepreneurial in nature. This is not a yoga class; we will be sitting on the floor (with props!) mostly talking. Bring a journal.

  • Understand the therapeutic application of the philosophy and practice of Yoga when working with depression, anxiety, addictions, PTSD and developmental/complex trauma.

  • Learn how to create safe classes and practices make for trauma survivors that emphasize choice and focus on the importance of internal, felt experience.

  • Explore & practice teaching therapeutic breathing and grounding techniques and the physical forms of Yoga.

  • Examine & discuss the Koshas (levels of the human being), Kleshas (the cycle of suffering), Yamas & Niyamas (ethics and practices), the Gunas (basic psychological archetypes), Langhana & Brahmana (categories of Yoga practices) as they pertain to trauma experience.

Reclaim, Connect and Thrive: Body/Mind Integration Yoga with Nicole Marcia (Jan-Feb 2019) CAD$161.70Purchase required to enroll

Modern postural yoga can support us to feel more at home in our bodies & more connected in our relationships, communities & beyond. This class series provides a space for personal inquiry & illumination for anyone who would like to tap into their own experience of body/mind connection both on & off the mat.

This trauma-informed class will focus on aspects of personal & social health & will include discussion, education, reflection & integration through a gentle, all-levels therapeutic movement practice. Students will learn body-based, self-regulation techniques to support resilience & a sense of agency in their bodies & in the world. The practice will emphasize internal experience, choice making & moving safely together. No hands-on adjustments. Beginners are welcome.

This is a trauma informed class, which means we focus on working individually and collectively to explore breath and sensations in our bodies through the yoga practice and get curious about our choices within that practice and in discussion with each other. The focus is less about how you look in a particular form and more about an inquiry into how you feel. If you are in an acute phase of trauma, working with others in a community space may not be the right choice for you. This is not a space for processing trauma stories, nor is it a substitute for therapy. Rather, it is a space for supporting the exploration and cultivation of bodily and social safety. Treating ourselves and each other with kindness and care is a high priority in this class.

If you have any concerns about whether this class is right for you, please email Nicole at nicolem@finebalanceyoga.ca.
