In this chilled-out all-levels class, we will stretch out our shoulders, backs, and hips, gently strengthen supportive muscles in the body, take deep breaths, slow down, and relax. The point of this class is to feel good, so we’ll sample from a range of different movement practices to ease our creaky joints and get our pep back in our step. We’ll do some standing, seated, and lying down poses with minimal weight bearing on the arms. Pregnant people are welcome as are brand-new beginners and anyone else who wants to take a break on a Tuesday to feel good.

In these classes we will focus on flowing through creative movement and connecting to slow deep breathing in order to calm the nervous system and ground the body and mind. We will move dynamically (but intentionally) with our breath as we sink into a flow of intuitive movement that encourages our busy mind to calm and rest its awareness in the flowing body. Release stress, breathe deeply, build strength and flexibility, and learn how to approach postures like standing, balancing, backbends, core work, and inversions (no pressure!). Through this moving mediation we will explore mindfulness and yogic philosophy in a playful and relatable manner. After flowing with breath, the end of this class will emphasize calming our nervous system and relaxing the body and mind through grounding postures, breathing techniques, and a long restful savasana. This class includes lots of options to modify depending on what you need that day.

Nourish: Yoga for Body, Mind, and Being

Wednesday, August 19th, 12-1pm, 2020 (online via Zoom)

This all levels class begins with a gentle warm up where the emphasis will be on choice making and experiencing the sensations of the body, rather than pushing you to the point of disconnection. These mindful movements release tightness in the hips, spine and breath that can feed the body’s stress response. When the hips and spine are open, the breath opens. And when the breath opens, the connection between mind and body opens. Practicing in that space makes it easier to access feelings of calmness both on and off the mat.

This is followed by a practice designed to create strength and space in the body and the nervous system, supported by breath. Candice weaves in the why behind the practice, encouraging students’ curiosity about how they experience their practice. Class ends with a restorative form tailored to your individual needs. Must be able to get up and down from the ground. Bring water and wear comfortable clothes.

Candice’s natural curiosity about her own healing from injuries and trauma led her to 20+ year yoga practice. This enthusiasm to learn and serve others on their healing journeys lead her to pursue her life as a yoga teacher and yoga therapist, while her African ancestry has made her passionate about calling in the BIPOC community to her classes. She is a 500 RYT, 200hr Himalayan Kriya Yoga teacher, Swing Yoga teacher, as well nearing her completion of her 800hr Yoga Therapy Diploma.

Intentional Rest: Restorative and Yoga Nidra with Katie Blecker IN-PERSON WORKSHOP (Oct 24th 2020) CAD$52.50Purchase required to enroll

Feeling stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed? Join Katie for a deeply nourishing self-care practice of restorative yoga and yoga nidra. You may attend online OR in-person; there are four spots available for in-person yoga.

Restorative yoga postures gently guide the body and mind into a state of comfort and relaxation, setting the stage for a deeply restful, therapeutic guided meditation practice called yoga nidra. In this way, we gradually prepare the body and mind for an experience of quiet and ease, which allows our systems to rest, replenish, and invite healing on many levels. This two hour experience is open to all levels of practice (including true beginners) and anyone who is comfortable with lying on the floor with the support of props. Online attendees can use household props you already have. The first hour or so will be dedicated to exploring a few restorative yoga postures and then we’ll move into a guided meditation experience.

Yoga nidra is the art and science of yogic sleep. You’ll be guided through a systematic series of instructions that gradually move your awareness inward. While your body experiences the physiological effects of sleep, your mind settles into a place of inner awareness. You’ll be guided through working with a sankalpa (a deep, heartfelt intention) which is a personal statement about something meaningful that you wish to call forth in your life. For some, the state of yoga nidra is a profound and introspective place. For others, it’s a chance to receive the physical benefits of true rest and relaxation. It’s commonly said that an hour or less of yoga nidra compares to 3-4 hours of actual deep sleep.

Saturday, October 24th, 2:00-4:00pm. $45+tax before October 17th, $50+tax after.

Saturday, November 7th, 2:00-4:00pm. $45+tax before November 1st, $50+tax after.

Intentional Rest: Restorative and Yoga Nidra with Katie Blecker ONLINE WORKSHOP (Nov 7th 2020) CAD$42Purchase required to enroll

Feeling stressed, exhausted, or overwhelmed? Join Katie for a deeply nourishing self-care practice of restorative yoga and yoga nidra.

You may attend online OR in-person; there are four spots available for in-person yoga. Recordings of the online event will be available for three days following this event. You must register at least an hour in advance of the class in order to get the appropriate link.

Adaptable Yoga for Many Abilities Using a Chair: A 6-week Online Series with Katie Blecker (Jan 2021) CAD$119.70Purchase required to enroll

This 6-week LIVE online series is ideal for beginners, older adults & seniors, or anyone else looking for a gentle, accessible, and therapeutic yoga class. Chair yoga is a great way to explore the benefits of a yoga practice without needing to get up and down from the floor, bear weight in the hands, or over-stress the body. Any kitchen chair with back support and ideally no arms will work. You can also use your wheelchair or walker if you have one.

Each class will include beginner-friendly breathing techniques to help manage stress and anxiety, as well as a gentle movement-based practice focused on functional strengthening, balance, and stretching. Throughout the series we will explore both seated and standing work, however if a fully-seated practice is better suited to you, options for that will also be provided.

These classes are designed to offer yoga in a way that is approachable, accessible, and pressure-free. Folks with injuries or disabilities are welcome. Classes are hosted live on Zoom (you can download the app for free). If you cannot make it to the class live, a recording will be emailed to you for use within 7 days.
